As it begins its year as UK City of Culture, Bradford city centre is undergoing a regeneration project.

The transformation includes regenerated transport infrastructure and a pedestrianised city centre.

The City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council (MDC) hopes to become the premier clean growth district in the UK and has the ambition of becoming a net zero carbon economy by 2038. Pedestrianisation and revamped transport are central to this goal.

The council wanted to create new public spaces and improve transport and travel into and around the city centre with better routes and facilities for public transport and active travel.

The project has been funded through West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Transforming Cities Fund (TCF) programme.

As part of the works, Hostile Vehicle Mitigation measures have been installed in the city centre.

Bradford MDC partnered with Crowdguard to design and implement HVM measures, utilising products from six leading manufacturers. A full HVM specification and design was provided, which included appropriate and proportionate HVM solutions based on Crowdguard's counter-terrorism strategy.

Installation of the ISO22343-1 /PAS68 / IWA14 tested permanent HVM products began in January 2024.

The newly installed measures include Heald Matador ST4, Townscape CT Sentry Block, ATG Access Centurion, Marshalls 7250 shallow mount bollards, MACS Pilomat automated bollards and Unafor Core. The work was completed earlier this month.

The opening events for Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture were held on 10 and 11 January with an outdoor theatrical event in City Park and Centenary Square.
