US Embassy warns on travel to Turkey

The US Embassy in Turkey has issued a security alert for travellers to Istanbul which warns of “possible imminent retaliatory attacks” by terrorists.

The US Embassy alert reads:

“The US government cautions its citizens of possible imminent retaliatory attacks by terrorists against churches, synagogues, and diplomatic missions in Istanbul or other places Westerners frequent, especially in the Beyoglu, Galata, Taksim, and Istiklal areas.

“Turkish authorities are investigating this matter. This message updates the 27 January 2023 security alert regarding Quran-burning incidents in Europe.”

Istanbul suffered a terrorism attack on 13 November which killed six people and injured 80. Turkish authorities blamed Kurdish separatists for the incident.

Shortly after the incident, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu defended Turkey's operations. He said:

"Terrorists want to establish a terror state around us. We cannot allow that. It is our duty to protect our borders and our nation"

A popular holiday destination, the country which straddles both the European and Asian continent has also seen the UK Government update its guidance for those planning trips there.
