On 21 August, the UK is set to observe its first National Day for Victims and Survivors of Terrorism.

The day will focus on remembering and recognising those impacted by terrorism, encouraging victims and survivors to access specialist support, educating the public, and amplifying victims’ and survivors’ stories.

The inauguration follows campaigning from victims and survivors for better recognition of their lived experiences and a public consultation on proposals for a national day which identified strong public support.

The 21st of August was chose as it aligns with the UN International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism.

Victims, survivors and bereaved family members are encouraged to observe the day in a way that is meaningful to them.

The National Day will also focus raising awareness about specialist support for victims and survivors, educating the public about the history and impacts of terrorism, and amplifying victims’ and survivors’ stories.

The government will still be working with victims and survivors to shape the format of the National Day for future years, including designing a dedicated symbol for the day.
