Former MEP pleads guilty to bribery after CT investigation

Former MEP and former leader of Reform UK in Wales Nathan Gill has pleaded guilty to eight counts of bribery, following an investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing.

The investigation revealed that Gill received payment in return for making statements which supported the presence of pro-Russian media outlets in Ukraine.

Gill pleaded guilty to eight counts of bribery, under the Bribery Act, 2010.

He was stopped at Manchester Airport on 13 September 2021 under schedule 3 of the Counter Terrorism and Borders Security Act, 2019. Officer seized his phone and detectives carried out a search at his north Wales home, where further electronic items were seized.

Evidence was found on his devices that showed how he was in contact with an individual in Ukraine and had agreed to receive money in exchange for making statements that were supportive of pro-Russia media being present in Ukraine.

Investigators matched the messages with open-source material which showed how Gill had made corresponding statements. Eight instances were identified between January 2018 and February 2020.

Gill was released on bail ahead of sentencing in November.
