Sydney: Man shot dead after threatening police officers with knife

A man has been shot dead at a police station in Sydney after threading police officers with a knife. It is believed the same man was involved in a stabbing at a train station a few minutes earlier.

The suspect arrived at Auburn police station just after midnight on Tuesday morning and threatened police officers with a knife. He was then shot in the chest with a pistol and a taser. Officers performed first aid and the suspect was taken to hospital where he later died.

The suspect has not yet been identified but it is believed the same man also stabbed a man at Auburn train station a few minutes earlier. A 28-year-old cleaner was stabbed in the arm and slashed across the hip.

The attack was unprovoked and it is not believed the attacker knew the victim. The victim was taken to hospital and is in a stable condition.

Assistant commissioner Stuart Smith said: “The cleaner was just going about his duties.

“He just happened to be the first person who was inside the turnstiles and was set upon without motive.”

Counterterrorism staff are involved in the investigation, and the public have been advised that the attacker was working alone. No motive has been established.

It has been reported that he came to Australia from India on a student visa in 2019.
