Salah Abdeslam found and arrested
Brussels police have found and arrested Salah Abdeslam (26), a suspect thought to have played a key role in the attacks that took place in Paris in November, who has been on the run since.
Abdeslam was shot and arrested in a police raid in Molenbeek following a four-month international manhunt. Around three hours after the raid began explosions were heard in the area and Belgian media reported that a third man had been arrested.
The news comes after Abdeslam’s fingerprints were found at a flat in the Forest area of Brussels, where two suspects escaped the raid. However, Belgian federal prosecutor Eric van der Sypt said officials were still unsure of how old the fingerprints were or how long Abdeslam had occupied the flat.
Police have also identified the DNA of Abdeslam’s accomplice, a man named Najim Laachraoui, who is still on the run.
Frederic Van Leeuw, Belgian prosecutor, said: ”We have quite a few pieces of the puzzle and in the last few days several pieces have found their place.”
However, he added: “We are still far from solving the puzzle.”
