Suicide bomber leaves 10 dead in Istanbul
An attack by a suicide bomber in Istanbul has left ten dead, according to Turkish officials.
The attack was carried out in the Sultanahmet district, near the city's famous Blue Mosque, leaving 10 dead and 15 wounded. Turkish officials have told the Associated Press that at least nine of the victims were German nationals.
Authorities are currently investigating the type of explosive used and claim that the suspect has been identified from body parts as a Syrian born in 1988.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that Turkey is a ‘top target’ for all terrorist organisations and that the country is ‘fighting against all of them equally’.
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu contacted German Chancellor Angela Merkel to inform her of the German Nationals effected by the attack.
Responding to the news, Merkel said: "Today Istanbul was hit; Paris has been hit, Tunisia has been hit, Ankara has been hit before. International terrorism is once again showing its cruel and inhuman face today."
