Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh killed in Iran

It has been reported that Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh has been killed by an Israeli attack in Tehran.

Iranian media reported that Haniyeh was staying at a building for war veterans in Tehran when he was killed around 2 am local time.

Hamas have said that Haniyeh was in Tehran to take part in the inauguration ceremony of the new Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Israel have not yet commented.

Haniyeh is a long-term member of Hamas and was previously imprisoned for three years by Israel in 1989. He was exiled in 1992. He was widely believed to be the group's overall leader.

In 2006, Haniyeh was appointed Palestinian prime minister by President Mahmoud Abbas after Hamas won the most seats in national elections. However, he was then dismissed a year later after Hamas ousted Abbas's Fatah party from the Gaza Strip with violence.

Thousands of people in Iran have attended his funeral procession in Iran, and Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, led prayers. It is expected his body will be buried in Qatar.

Since the attack, Iran has promised 'harsh punishment' for Israel, who it blames for the attack.

Also this week, Israel claims to have killed a Hezbollah military leader, Fuad Shukr, in Beirut. Four other people, including two children were killed in this attack. Israel said that the strike was intelligence based and in response to a rocket attack that killed 12 people in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Israel says that Shukr helped plan the attack. Hezbollah has denied this.

Shukr is believed to have been a key military advisor to Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
