Brussels suspect released due to lack of evidence

The only suspect to be charged in relation to the recent terror attacks in Brussels has been released, with prosecutors saying there is a lack of evidence to link him to the event. Faycal Cheffou was arrested on 26 March and charged with murder and attempted murder in relation to the attacks on Brussels airport and Maelbeek station that left 35 dead. There was speculation that Cheffou was the ‘man in the hat’ who was seen on CCTV footage walking through Brussels airport with explosive laden luggage alongside Ibrahim El Bakraoui and Najim Laachraoui, who blew themselves up in the attacks. Police had been working to link Cheffou to the scene but failed to find suitable evidence. A statement released by federal prosecutor's office said: "The indications that led to the arrest of Faycal C. were not substantiated by the ongoing inquiry. As a result, the subject has been released by the examining magistrate.” Police are continuing their investigation to identify the third man shown in the CCV footage.
