IS leader killed by Taliban

According to US officials, the Taliban have killed an IS leader responsible for the 2021 Kabul airport bombing.

The bombing took place as people were trying to flee Afghanistan when the Taliban took control. 170 civilians and 13 US soldiers were killed.

A senior US official told CBS: "Experts in the government are at high confidence that this individual… was indeed the key individual responsible [for the airport bombing]."

US officials told CBS that the figure, who has not been named, was killed weeks ago, but it took a while to confirm the death. According to the New York Times, the US learned of the death in early April.

It is not clear whether he was targeted by the Taliban or if he was killed in ongoing fighting between the two groups.
