SIA thanks staff on International Security Officers' Day

24 July marks International Security Officers' Day, celebrating the role security play protecting the public 24/7.

Heather Baily, chair of the Security Industry Authority (SIA), has written a message of thanks to those in the private security industry who help to keep the public safe.

She also spoke to three frontline security officers to learn more about their roles and responsibilities, as well as their advice and perspective for the rest of the private security industry.

Baily said: "As we mark International Security Officers’ Day this year, I can’t help but reflect with pride on the many examples of outstanding actions of so many security officers that I’ve heard about over the last four years in my time as Chair at the SIA.

"Whether it’s on the 24th July each year, or at the many prestigious awards events in the private security industry throughout the year, we rightly take the time to celebrate the professionalism of the fantastic people in the industry who go above and beyond the call of duty in protecting the public. Today we have published stories of some amazing individuals. There are undoubtedly many qualities that these security operatives share with many of you who work on the front line, including bravery, compassion, and so much more.

"The training required to become an SIA licence holder is just the beginning and it’s important to remember the many interpersonal and safety critical skills that you will develop beyond your initial training, will allow you to thrive in your role."

On International Security Officers Day, the public are encouraged to acknowledge any security operatives they see on the day, for example saying hello or thank you with a smile.

Security business owners and managers are also encouraged to acknowledge their staff, for example by sending thank you messages to their staff, organising an event or site visit to say thank you in person, and acknowledging their officers on social media.

International Security Officers’ Day is held on 24 July to represent the 24/7 nature of security work.

Heather Baily will be visiting security operatives in Manchester to hear directly from operatives about their experience and the challenges they’ve faced protecting the public, while SIA CEO Michelle Russell will be doing the same in London.
