Radical preacher Anjem Choudary has been charged with terrorism offences.

He and another man, Khaled Hussein from Canada, were arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences last week.

Choudary was charged on Sunday with membership of a proscribed organisation, contrary to section 11 of the Terrorism Act 2000; addressing meetings to encourage support for a proscribed organisation, contrary to sections 12(3) of the Terrorism Act 2000; and directing a terrorist organisation, contrary to section 56 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

Hussein was also charged with membership of a proscribed organisation, contrary to section 11 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

Both men have been remanded in custody to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Monday, 24 July.

Choudary was previously imprisoned in 2016 for encouraging support for Islamic State and was released in 2018 after serving half of a five-and-a-half year sentence.

Choudary is the former head of the now banned organization al-Muhajiroun.
