Barcelona van driver shot dead by police

Spanish police have shot and killed the main suspect in Barcelona’s latest terror attack, Younes Abouyaaquob. Abouyaaquob was believed to be the driver of the van which mowed down and killed 13 people on Las Ramblas avenue, injuring more than 100 others. Abouyaaquob, wearing a fake explosive belt, is reported to have shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ (‘God is Greatest’) before being shot down by police some 25 miles west of Barcelona. A manhunt was already under way when police closed in on the area, close to Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, after a petrol station employee spotted Abouyaaquob and called the police. He was found hiding in vineyards. Abouyaaquob escaped the scene of the Barcelona attack on foot to the outskirts of the city where he hijacked a car and stabbed its driver, 34-year-old Pau Pérez. CCTV footage appears to show him walking through a market district. The terror cell behind the attacks was 12 strong. Police say eight suspects are now dead and four in custody.
