Sydney police say Bondi attacker targeted women

The New South Wales Police commissioner has told ABC news in Australia, that it was 'obvious' that the man who stabbed several people in Bondi Junction on Saturday was targeting women.

The attacker, who has been named as 40-year-old Joel Cauchi, carried out a stabbing attack in the Westfield shopping centre in Bondi Junction. Five women and one man (a security guard who tried to intervene) were killed in the attack.

Several people were also injured, including the baby of one of the women killed.

The attacker was killed by a police officer, after he allegedly lunged at her with a knife.

Authorities had previously said that the attack was linked to the mental health of the attacker.

Cauchi was known to police, but had not previously been arrested or charged in Queensland, where he was from.

False claims had circulated online that the attacker was either Jewish or Muslim.

A special strike force has been established to investigate the incident.
