23 soldiers killed in attack at Pakistan army base

23 soldiers have been killed and dozens more injured after an attack at a police compound.

A vehicle containing explosives rammed into the building in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, near the Afghan border. The compound was being used as a base camp for the Pakistani army.

Responsibility for the attack has been claimed by Tahreek-e-Jihad Pakistan, a militant group affiliated to the Pakistani Taliban.

In a statement, the army said that before the ramming, several militants had tried and failed to enter the compound.

A truck with explosives was rammed into the boundary wall and this was followed by a suicide bomb attack which lead to the collapse of the building.

Six attackers have been killed.
