Afghan cleric killed by bomb in artificial leg

A prominent Afghan cleric and supporter of the Taliban has reportedly been killed in a suicide bomb attack in Kabul.

Speaking to Reuters, Taliban sources said the attacker had previously lost his leg and had hidden the explosives in an artificial leg.

It is not currently clear who is responsible for the attack.

A senior Taliban official in the interior ministry said: "We are investigating who this ... person was and who had brought him to this important place to enter the personal office of Sheikh Rahimullah Haqqani. It's a very huge loss for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan" (referring to the group's name for its administration).

Haqqani had previously survived other attacks, including one in Peshawar in 2020 that killed at least seven people and was claimed by the Islamic State.
