PKK says it is disbanding

Kurdish group the PKK, which is banned as a terrorist group in Turkey, the UK, the US and the EU, has announced that it is laying down its arms and disbanding.
In February, the group's leader called for the group to disband from jail. Abdullah Ocalan has been in solitary confinement in prison on an island in the Sea of Marmara since 1999.
Initially, the PKK aimed to create an independent homeland for Kurds, but has since moved more towards autonomy and greater rights for Kurds.
Over the last 40 years of conflict more than 40,000 people have been killed.
