PSNI appoints new chief constable

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has announced Jon Boutcher has its new chief constable.

Boutcher is currently the interim chief constable at PSNI and previously served as head of Bedfordshire Police.

His predecessor, Simon Byrne, resigned in September.

The appointment was made by the Policing Board and approved by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.

The force has more than 9,000 staff and a £800m budget.

Boutcher previously applied to lead the Met last year, and also to become PSNI chief constable in 2019, but was unsuccessful on both occasions.
