France thwarted two additional Islamist terror plots

Laurent Nunez has told the Europe 1 radio station that French authorities foiled two Islamist plots last year, meaning that a total of 33 Islamist terrorist plots have been foiled in France since 2017.

The National Coordinator for Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism has said that attacks coming from abroad are now ‘less likely’ because ISIS has become ‘very weak’ in the Middle East. However, he warned that Islamist terrorism remains a ‘priority threat’ that is growing ‘increasingly difficult to detect’.

Although two attacks were foiled, five attacks took place on French soil last year, including the murder of Samuel Paty and the stabbing in Nice. The attacks prompted the government to crack down on mosques and Muslim NGOs suspected of promoting radical views.
