Hundreds of young children reported to Prevent

Reports claim that the counter terrorism Prevent programme has received possible radicalisation referrals for 532 children under the age of six and 1,181 children under the age of nine.

The Home Office recently launched an open competition to appoint the next Independent Reviewer of Prevent. A review into the controversial programme, started by Lord Carlile, has been halted until his successor can be appointed. It was expected to be shared with Parliament by August 2020.

Prevent was introduced by the Labour government in 2003, albeit not immediately publicly. It is one of the four pillars which make up the government’s Contest Strategy.
