Controlled explosion and man arrested outside Buckingham Palace

A man has been arrested after throwing a number of items into the grounds of Buckingham Palace. The items are believed to be shotgun cartridges and have been taken away for specialist examination.

The man, who has not been named, was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon after he was searched and a knife was found. Police said he was not carrying a firearm.

The 59-year-old is currently in custody.

A controlled explosion was carried out on a suspicious bag the man was in possession of.

Chief Superintendent Joseph McDonald, said: “Officers worked immediately to detain the man and he has been taken into police custody.

“There were no reports of any shots fired, or any injuries to officers or members of the public. Enquiries are ongoing.”

Police said that at this time, the matter is not being treated as terror related.
