Hamas leader killed in Beirut

Saleh al-Arouri, a deputy political leader of Hamas, has been killed in a drone strike in southern Beirut.

Al-Arouri had been a key figure in Hamas's armed wing, the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades, and was also a close ally of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

He was in Lebanon acting as a connection between Hamas and Hezbollah. Both groups are considered terrorist organisations by the UK.

Lebanon's state news agency reported he was killed by an Israeli drone attack on a Hamas office in the suburb of Dahiyeh.

Since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, there have been regular exchanges of fire between Hezbollah and Israeli forces.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) refused to comment on the attack and has neither confirmed nor denied that it killed Saleh al-Arouri.
