Trump calls for death penalty after New York attack

Never one for conventional measures, US President Donald Trump has tweeted that Sayfullo Saipov, the suspect behind the recent New York terror attack, should get the death penalty. The attack, which took place on 31 October, saw the suspect drive a truck down a New York City bike path, killing eight pedestrians in the process. Saipov, who was shot by police before being arrested, has been charged with one count of violence and destruction of motor vehicles, as well as one count of providing material support and resources of a foreign terrorist group. A criminal compliant filed against him recorded that Saipov, an Uzbek immigrant, had been inspired to carry out the act after watching ISIS videos. Tweeting on 1 November, Trump said: “NYC terrorist was happy as he asked to hang ISIS flag in his hospital room. He killed 8 people, badly injured 12. SHOULD GET DEATH PENALTY!”
