Anjem Choudary blames Kevin Keegan effect for notoriety

Anjem Choudary has claimed the "Kevin Keegan effect" made people believe that he was still a member of a banned terrorist group.

Choudary is on trial at Woolwich Crown Court, facing charges of directing a terrorism organisation, and being a member of and supporting a banned group.

Canadian Khaled Hussein is also on trial accused of being a member of a banned organisation. The pair deny the charges.

As reported by the BBC, Choudary said: "If you ask about Kevin Keegan, people say ‘he plays football for Liverpool'. People look at me and think Al Muhajiroun.”

Giving evidence for the first time, Choudary claimed that he was an original member of the group, from 1996, however, it was wound up in 2004 and not replaced by another group.

The prosecution is arguing that the group continued under another name and claims that Choudary was still acting as its leader up to July 2023.
