Home secretary planning Prevent overhaul

Home secretary Suella Braverman is planning an overhaul of the government's counter-extremism programme, after an inquiry stated that Prevent was protecting terrorists and not the public and was treating potential terrorists as victims.

According to government sources, reform of Prevent is a key priority for Braverman over the next few months.

The official inquiry seen by The Telegraph concluded that the programme has strayed from its core mission of preventing people from becoming terrorists.

The report also claims that some taxpayer funding is at risk of being distributed to groups that promote extremist views.

The inquiry also claims that Prevent focusses disproportionately on far-right extremism instead of Islamism.

The report was written by William Shawcross, the former chairman of the Charity Commission and was originally commissioned by Priti Patel.

A government source said: “The Home Secretary takes terrorism prevention incredibly seriously and has been clear Prevent reform is a key priority for her within her first few months in the role. The Prevent Review will form part of her thinking around how Britain can stay one of the safest countries in the world.
