New anti-terror law for the UK

A new Counter Terrorism and Security Bill has received Royal Assent from the Queen

The home secretary, Theresa May said that the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris last month highlighted the need to “combat the underlying ideology that feeds, supports and sanctions terrorism”.

The new powers include bolstering existing powers for passport removal, and will allow police to “disrupt” individuals who are suspected of leaving the country to join terror cells abroad and prevent them leaving the country while investigations are carried out.

Prime Minister David Cameron has previously announced additional funding of £130 million to aid and support counter-terror measures, including funding to monitor terrorist activity and resources for anti-radicalisation programs.
