Islamic State attack in Syria kills 11

At least 11 people have died in an attack in central Syria which is being blamed on ISIS.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, 10 civilians and a member of the Syrian forces were killed. Others remain missing.

The Observatory reports that about 75 people were attacked whilst collecting truffles in the Palmyra area.

According to the official Syrian News Agency (SANA), they were attacked with machine guns.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, since its defeat in 2019, Islamic State has retreated the the desert of Syria, between Homs (central) and Deir ez-Zor (east) at the border with Iraq.

Truffle pickers in the area are also faced with the threat of mines planted by IS, whilst the area was under their control.
