Miss Belgium competition attack suspect arrested

A suspect has been detained in Belgium, accused of attempted terrorist murder at the Miss Belgium competition.

Peter C was arrested on Saturday, believed to about about to launch an attack. He was armed and a second weapon found in his car.

A dutch woman has also been arrested. It is believed she is a friend of Peter C.

Peter C was arrested at the Proximus Theater in the Plopsaland amusement park in De Panne as the final of the competition was about to begin. It is understood that he threatened to commit an atrocity.

It is believed an acquaintance of the suspect contacted the police out of fear for what he was about to do.

His home has has also been searched, where four weapons were retrieved. He holds a licence for five firearms.

A motive has not been established and the suspect is not known to the security services.

The 46-year-old will appear in court later this week.

Eric Van Der Sypt of federal prosecutors said: "There was a very real threat an attack that could have turned out nasty was about to take place. An atrocity was probably averted."
