Man charged with inciting racial hatred

A man from Newcastle has been charged with inciting racial hatred, after an investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing North East.

Nathan Thompson has been charged with nine offences of Inciting Racial Hatred and two offences of Malicious Communications.

Six of the charges for Inciting Racial Hatred are under Section 19(1) of the Public Order Act 1986, which relates to allegedly publishing or distributing written material which is "threatening, abusive or insulting" and is considered intended to "stir up racial hatred".

The remaining three offences relate to Section 21 of the Act, which concerns allegedly distributing, showing or playing a recording which is also considered "threatening, abusive or insulting" and intended to "stir up racial hatred".

The 24-year-old is due to appear before Newcastle Magistrates Court on 4 March.
