Aviation ground security get chance to improve skills

New qualification follows new skills framework for aviation security

Aviation ground security at UK airports will, for the first time, be able to take a new qualification geared towards their specific role.

According to GoSkills and People 1st, the new sector skills council for hospitality, passenger transport, travel and tourism, the staff gaining the level 2 Diploma in Aviation Security from City & Guilds and Edexcel will give airport passengers a better experience.

This follows a new skills framework for aviation security developed by GoSkills with extensive contribution from key employers.

The new framework looks at the key drivers not only for the mandatory requirements for the aviation security role, but includes customer service units to ensure continued passenger satisfaction and a consistent high level of service.

Julie Blasbery, Head of Industry Skills for Aviation at GoSkills, commented that the new standards were a welcome boost to the aviation industry as the UK gears up for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"UK airports have enthusiastically worked together to ensure that the new National Occupational Standards were developed and embedded as quickly as possible, plugging any skills gaps identified."

"Their involvement and commitment clearly demonstrates their recognition of the valuable role that aviation security staff play, within a passenger aviation journey."
