Bali bomber released from prison

Umar Patek, the bombmaker involved in the 2002 Bali bombing has been released from prison in Indonesia.

202 people from 21 countries were killed in the attacks.

Patek was accused of being a bombmaker for al-Qaeda-inspired group Jemaah Islamiah. He was jailed for 20 years in 2012 after being on the run for nearly 10 years. He served just over half his sentence.

Indonesian authorities claim he has been deradicalised and no longer poses a threat. He is eligible for release due to sentence reductions for good behaviour.

Patek will be required to attend a "mentoring programme" until 2030. If a violation is discovered, his parole will be revoked.
