Canada repatriating families from Syria

According to a lawyer representing a group of women and children in Islamic State camps in Syria, they are on their way back to Canada.

In January, the federal government agreed to repatriate six women and their 13 children. Their lawyer Lawrence Greenspon said on Wednesday that they were en route to Canada.

Greenspon said: "I've talked to their various family members here in Canada and they are absolutely delighted that some three-and-a-half years after we started this process of trying to bring the women and children home, their loved ones are on their way."

It has not been shared when or where they will arrive in Canada.

There is uncertainty around whether one of the women and her six children are in the group. Though Greenspan believes that she is not on the flight, as officials are still conducting a security and risk assessment for her, but offered to repatriate the children without her.

It is not clear whether any of those being repatriated will face any charges.

A federal court has also ordered the government to repatriate four men who are imprisoned in camps in Syria though have not been formally charged with crimes. One of the four men is British-Canadian dual national, Jack Letts - though his British citizenship has been revoked.
