Burkina Faso convoy attack claimed by Al Qaeda branch

Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen, the Sahel-based branch of Al Qaeda has claimed an attack on a convoy in Burkina Faso that killed several people.

The convoy was attacked on 26 September, whilst taking supplies to a town in the north of the country.

According to a SITE statement, Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen claimed the attack and said it "caused significant economic losses to the enemy and 'led to a shakeup' in the Burkinabe army ranks, culminating in the military coup".

Burkina Faso then faced its second military takeover this year a few days later.

According to the government at the time, 11 soldiers were killed and 50 civilians reported missing after the attack. However an internal security document seen by Reuters said 27 soldiers had been killed.
