42 bodies found in mass grave in Libya

According to Libya's Missing Person's Authority, 42 bodies have been found in a mass grave in a former stronghold of the Islamic State group.

A spokesperson for the authority said in a statement that the bodies had been exhumed from a school site following a "tip off" from an investigation conducted with captured Islamic State fighters.

The spokesperson said the bodies had been transferred to a nearby hospital and the process had begun to identify them. No information has been given on the cause of death.

Sirte, where the bodies were discovered, was under Islamic State control between 2015 and 2016. The group were expelled from the city in December 2016 by forces fighting for the former UN-backed Government of National Accord.
