Man charged with terrorism after murder in Sweden

A man has been charged with terrorism in Sweden, after he killed a woman on the island of Gotland in July.

The suspect stabbed psychiatrist Ing-Marie Wieselgren, a coordinator for the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions. The attack took place in broad daylight during Almedalen, an annual political festival.

Police also reported that the suspect had wanted to murder Centre Party leader Annie Lööf who was also at the event.

A psychiatric assessment ordered by the court found that the accused was mentally ill at the time of the attack.

Before the attack, he has acquired a knife, two swords and a bow and arrow. According to investigators, he also had detailed information about the plans of Wieselgren and Lööf.

The trial is expected to begin on 8 November.
