Marine charged with terror offences

A Royal Marine from Northern Ireland has been charged with manufacturing explosives, making devices and storing them in barrels in hides. Ciarán Maxwell, from Larne in County Antrim, has been issued with a number of charges, including the possession of cannabis and one case of fraud. In addition, Maxwell was found to have obtained articles for use in terrorism, specifically chemicals and components to make bombs and an ‘image of an adapted PSNI pass card’. The Marine was arrested in Somerset after police conducted searches in Larne and Devon, and was taken to West Country police station. He has since been transferred to a London police station and is being questioned on suspicion of being involved in the preparation for acts of terrorism under Section Five of the Terrorism Act.
