Compensation available for victims of Uganda terror attack

The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority has announced that victims injured, or the families of those killed in a terrorist attack in Uganda can apply for compensation.

The attack at Queen Elizabeth National Park in Western Uganda on 17 October has been designated as an act of terrorism by The Secretary of State for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

Applications can be made to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) under the Victims of Overseas Terrorism Compensation Scheme 2012 (VOTCS). Applicants do not need a paid representative, such as a solicitor or claims management company, to apply for compensation.

According to the BBC, a couple on their honeymoon and their guide were killed in the attack in a national park. The couple were from the UK and South Africa and their guide was Ugandan.

The attack has been linked to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebel group, an IS-linked Islamist group.

Since the attack, the UK Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for Uganda, advising against all but essential travel to Queen Elizabeth National Park.
