Online engagement events for Prevent conversation
William Shawcross, the Independent Review of Prevent, is reviewing the government's strategy for supporting people vulnerable to being drawn into terrorism.
As part of this, Shawcross wants to hear from as wide a range of people as possible to help inform his final report and has now announced plans for virtual public engagement events.
The events provide an opportunity for the public to have their say on Prevent, informing the recommendations submitted to government, and to share their views on key issues, including: the impact of Prevent on individuals, families and communities; the criticisms and complaints about Prevent; tackling the causes of radicalisation; and whether there should be a strategy aimed at supporting those vulnerable to being drawn into terrorism and what should it look like.
Shawcross said: “I am conducting this review without fear or favour and would encourage anyone with a knowledge of Prevent, either through lived experience, or their paid or voluntary work to attend and share their thoughts. I know there is a huge range of viewpoints and I am happy to hear from advocates and critics and everyone in between. It is important to me that I hear all the evidence, so I can make recommendations on how to better support people to turn away from terrorism and help keep the public safe. Please do consider taking part; this is your opportunity to make your voice heard.”
Each event will be held virtually on an online video platform Zoom.
