Christchurch attacker sentenced to life without parole

The man who killed 51 people at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, in March last year has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Australian Brenton Tarrant is the first person in the country's history to receive a sentence of such severity, after a judge found that he had ‘showed no mercy’ and acted in an ‘inhuman’ way.

The 29-year-old admitted to the murder of 51 people, attempted murder of another 40 people and one charge of terrorism, as part of his attack last year, which he livestreamed. His conviction is also the first terrorism conviction in New Zealand's history.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said that the sentencing would mean the offender would have ‘no notoriety, no platform... and we have no cause to think about him, to see him or to hear from him again’.
