New terrorism charges filed against Imran Khan

Police in Pakistan have filed terrorism charges against former prime minister Imran Khan, 17 of his aides and some supporters.

They are accused of terrorism and other offences, following clashes with police in Islamabad outside a court where Khan was to appear in a graft case. Khan did not actually appear in the court to faces charges of selling state gifts he has received while in office.

According to reports, more than 50 officers were injure and a police checkpoint, cars and motorcycles were set on fire. 59 Khan supporters were arrested during the violence, during which police fired tear gas.

Others facing charges include former and current lawmakers, former ministers, and a former National Assembly speaker. The charges include terrorism, obstructing police officers in carrying out their tasks, attacks on police, wounding officers and threatening their lives.

Khan was ousted from power in a no-confidence vote in April last year.
