Terrorist motive possible in Berlin motorway incident
A man who rammed several vehicles on a motorway in Berlin is being investigated for what prosecutors say was ‘an Islamist-motivated attack’.
Three people were seriously injured when the suspect's car collided with vehicles on the A100 motorway on the evening of 18 August, Witnesses say that the 30-year-old Iraqi suspect claimed to have a ‘dangerous object’ in a box, although nothing was later found inside.
Prosecutors are investigating the attack as having either a political or religious motive but they have not ruled out psychological issues.
Police and prosecutors say the series of crashes in three separate places on the A100 near the centre of Berlin were being considered as ‘deliberate attacks on other road users’.
Several media outlets also reported the man shouted 'Allahu akbar' (God is great) as he got out of his car.
The centre of Berlin was targeted in December 2016 when a truck was driven into a crowded Christmas market, killing 12 people and leaving 49 others injured.
