‘Stay Safe’ film advises what to do in a terror attack

The National Police Chiefs’ Council has released a short video giving advice to the public on the steps they should take to protect themselves in the event of a firearms or weapons attack.

The video follows the ‘Run, Hide, Tell’ advice that was published in November following the weapons attack in Paris, which recommends that people’s first option, if they can, should be to run away. If running away is not an option, people should hide and then, when possible, tell the police what’s happening so they can get help there quickly to stop the threat.

The National Counter Terrorism Security Office has said that the film is not intended to unnecessarily scare the public, but to ensure they know the steps to take, claiming that it makes sense to plan the response to such an attack ’in the same way people plan how to respond to a fire’.

Neil Basu, Deputy Assistant Commissioner, said: “The police service is working tirelessly to confront the terrorist threat we all face. To do this we need the help of the public. We need them to be alert, but not alarmed. We need them to be vigilant and to report any suspicious behaviour or activity to the confidential Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321 or in an emergency dial 999.

“We are releasing this film which we hope will provide practical steps to take in the extremely rare event of a terrorist attack.

“Communities defeat terrorism, which is why we must maintain the strong relationship between the public and police. We depend on information from the public, who can be our eyes and ears, in our efforts to keep us all safe. We must also give information to the public to help them stay safe.”
