Brokenshire resigns from security role to focus on recovery
James Brokenshire has resigned as Security Minister to focus on restoring his health after revealing that his treatment for lung cancer is ‘taking longer than anticipated’.
Brokenshire was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2018, and stepped back from his role in January ahead of surgery. The MP for Old Bexley and Sidcup was discharged from Guy's Hospital in London in February after a ‘frustrating resurgence’ in the disease required surgery to remove his right lung.
Brokenshire has been a vocal supporters of Martyn’s Law, now known as the Protect Duty, which proposes the introduction of free counter-terror training for event staff, assessments of locations to see how vulnerable they are, and the need for venues and local authorities to have clear counter-terror action plans.
