New counter terrorism tactics at Luton Airport

Police officers at London Luton Airport have adopted new counter terrorism tactics with the hope of deterring potential terrorists and criminals.

The Project Servator strategy will be used to deter, detect and disrupt a range of criminality, including terrorism. This is carried out by using visible and plain-clothed police officers, as well as detection dogs, armed officers, vehicle checkpoints, automatic number plate recognition and CCTV.

Project Servator has helped contribute towards seizures totalling £15,000 since a trial began at the airport in June, as well as the arrests of people for a range of offences, vehicle seizures, and a significant number of intelligence reports.

Inspector Ian Taylor said: “The public shouldn’t be worried if they come across a deployment; in fact I would encourage anyone to talk to the officers to find out more. The public can play a key role in keeping the airport community safe by reporting anything that seems out of place, unusual or doesn’t seem to fit with day-to-day life.”
