Counter terror police investigate after explosives found at Heathrow, Waterloo and London City Airport

Counter-terror police are investigating three packages containing explosives found at Heathrow Airport, London City Airport and Waterloo station on 5 March.

The small explosive devices were found in A4 postal bags with Republic of Ireland stamps.

The counter terror police believe the explosives are linked.

The package was sent to Heathrow's Compass Centre, which is an office for Heathrow staff rather than part of the passenger terminals. The package was opened and caught fire, prompting the Compass Centre to be evacuated, although no injuries occurred.

Scotland Yard said: "The packages - all A4-sized white postal bags containing yellow Jiffy bags - have been assessed by specialist officers to be small improvised explosive devices.

"These devices, at this early stage of the investigation, appear capable of igniting an initially small fire when opened."

A further package was found at Waterloo Station at 11.40am, but was not opened, and half an hour later, another package was found at a building close to City airport in east London. The package was not opened and nobody was injured.
