Half of world's terrorism victims in Africa

Counter Terror experts have labelled Africa as the world's terrorism hotspot, with half of terror victims killed last year in sub-Saharan Africa.

During a panel discussion at the UN, Interpol reported that terrorism linked to extreme right-wing ideology increased an estimated 50-fold over the past decade, particularly in Europe, North America and parts of the Asia-Pacific.

The United Nations is currently hosting a conference for heads of counter-terrorism agencies. The theme of the conference is addressing terrorism through reinvigorated international cooperation.

It was also reported that deteriorating global security is making the threat from terrorism more complex and decentralised. Terrorist are using more sophisticated technology and drones and artificial intelligence have opened new ways to plan and carry out attacks.

U.N. Assistant Secretary-General Khaled Khiari said: “Africa has emerged as the key battleground for terrorism, with a major increase in the number of active groups operating on the continent."
