David Cameron appointed foreign secretary

Former prime minister David Cameron has been appointed foreign secretary.

Cameron replaces James Cleverly, who has been appointed Home Secretary, after Suella Braverman was sacked.

Cameron served as prime minister from 2010 to 2016, and resigned after the Brexit referendum and was replaced by Theresa May.

During his time as prime minister, Cameron oversaw austerity, the passing of the Health and Social Care Act and the legalisation of same-sex marriage in England and Wales, as well as the Scottish independence referendum.

Cameron is known as the prime minister who called the Brexit referendum in 2016. Cameron campaigned to remain, and resigned after the result.

On X, Cameron said: "While I have been out of front-line politics for the last seven years, I hope that my experience - as Conservative Leader for eleven years and Prime Minister for six - will assist me in helping the prime minister."
