Live Facial Recognition deployment leads to arrest

The Metropolitan police have announced that a man was arrested for failing to appear at court following his identification by Live Facial Recognition (LFR).

A police van with Live Facial Recognition (LFR) technology was operating on Saturday 9 September, when a 26-year-old man passed through the deployment area and was identified as as wanted for failing to appear for sentencing on 5 May 2023 at Thames Magistrates’ Court.

Whilst being detained, the man assaulted a police officer. He was also found in possession of Class B drugs and was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and possession of drugs in addition to the 'wanted' offence.

The assaulted police officer from the Met’s Violent Crime Taskforce was taken to hospital for treatment to head injuries and has since been discharged.
