Festivals must take extra security measures, Basu says

Neil Basu, deputy assistant commissioner with the Metropolitan police, has called on music executives to implement extra security measures in the run-up to festival season, warning that music fans could be the target of the next major terrorist attack in Britain. Although the majority of stadiums already have struck security measures in place, Basu cautioned that there were concerns over the rise to the night-time economy. In an interview with the Sunday Times, he said: “I’d want to see the owners and event managers taking the same kind of security precautions. These people are perfectly happy to target civilians with the maximum terror impact. Crowded places were always a concern for us, but now they are right at the top of the agenda.” Basu added that music festivals were particularly hard to control and secure because of their large perimeters.
