Britons 'not bothered' by cyber terrorism threat

Britons are among the most complacent people in the world when it comes to online and national security, a study has shown.

Public concerns about terror threats and IT fraud risks have dropped to an all-time low – even though attempted attacks by cyber-criminals are actually on the rise.

Research released today rated public concern about online security at 97 out of 300, a far lower figure than those for other western nations, and the lowest since similar surveys began in 2007.

The global average is 140 – indicating 'a moderate level of concern', according to security firm Unisys.

The US scored 131 and Germany 135, up to Colombia at 191.

Britons are most concerned about ID fraud and the risks to credit and debit cards, with 45 per cent expressing 'serious' worries, the study showed.

This week it was claimed a complex virus was being used by a government-backed group to target countries including Iran and Russia.

The 'Flame' bug has reportedly been used to take control of computers and steal sensitive information for several years.
